In this post: Ever wondered why you should bother practising self-care? Here are 7 proven benefits of self-care — from better sleep to more energy and happiness — plus simple ways to start today.
Hi lovely,
Did you know that July 24th is Self-Care Day?
Now, if your first thought is “That sounds nice, but I don’t have time for that right now”… I hear you (I’ve currently got about 400 things on my to-do list, no joke 🤯)!
But here’s the thing:
Self-care isn’t selfish.
And it’s definitely not lazy.
It’s actually one of the most powerful things you can do to support yourself, especially when life feels full.
This morning, even though life feels busier than usual, I took a little extra care with how I got ready. I put on clothes that made me feel good and even spritzed my favourite perfume — just for me.
It didn’t take much extra time… but it really shifted how I felt.
That’s the magic of self-care. 🪄
It doesn’t have to look like bubble baths or spa days (though those are lovely too). It’s about tuning in and asking, what would feel nourishing right now?
Then go do it!
And, if you’ve ever felt guilty for taking a moment for yourself, or brushed self-care off as a “nice-to-have”, keep reading to learn why self-care isn’t indulgent… It’s essential ‼️
In fact, research shows that regular self-care isn’t something that should be treated as optional. Not only does it improve your health and happiness, it even increases your ability to show up for the people and things you love most.
Here are seven proven benefits of self-care — and a few ideas to help you put them into practice in ways that feel good for you.

1. 💛 Reduces Anxiety and Depression
When you make time for self-care — whether that’s journaling, moving your body, or simply breathing deeply — you help regulate your nervous system.
Research shows this can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, and promote a greater sense of calm and balance.
Try this: Take a 10-minute screen break today. Instead, close your eyes, breathe deeply, and let your body unwind. 🧘♀️
2. 💆♀️ Lowers Stress and Increases Coping Capacity
We all face challenges — but how we respond to them matters.
It creates a sense of inner steadiness you can return to, even in chaos.
Try this: Step outside and spend 5 minutes just feeling the sunshine on your skin, or go for a walk and let nature do its magic. 🌿
3. ✨ Boosts Happiness, Confidence & Emotional Wellbeing
When you nurture your needs, you remind yourself that you matter.
Over time, this builds self-trust, confidence, emotional stability and happiness. You start to feel more like you again.
Try this: Write down 3 small wins from the past week — things you did that made you feel proud, even if no one else noticed. ✍️

4. 🩺 Improves Physical Health
Self-care isn’t just about the mind — it has big effects on the body too.
Studies show it can lower the risk of chronic illnesses like heart disease, stroke, and even some cancers.
It’s a reminder that what you do today really can influence your health tomorrow.
Try this: Nourish yourself with something that makes your body feel good — a healthy meal, a big glass of water, or an early night. 🍎💤

5. ⚡ Increases Energy & Productivity
When you’re well-rested, well-fed, and emotionally supported, you can do more — and with greater ease.
Self-care fuels you so you’re not running on empty.
Taking regular care of yourself isn’t counterproductive; it actually helps you to get more done with less stress.
Try this: Give yourself permission to pause for a few minutes. Rest isn’t a reward — it’s necessary to recharge your batteries. 🪫>🔋
6. 🌱 Builds Resilience and Prevents Burnout
Especially in emotionally intense roles or busy seasons, self-care acts like an internal reboot to keep you grounded, balanced, and ready to bounce back after hard days, instead of burning out from them.
As a Highly Sensitive Person who processes everything deeply, I find regular self-care is a MUST to prevent burnout, even when life is “normal”.
Try this: Add a “reset” moment to your day — a walk around the block, a 5-minute journal session, or listening to a favourite song to clear your head. 🔁
7. 🤝 Strengthens Relationships
When you care for yourself, you’re able to show up more fully in your relationships — with more patience, presence, and capacity to connect.
Self-care makes space for real connection because you’re not constantly pouring from an empty cup.
Try this: Text a friend who lights you up and say, “Thinking of you today 💛” — it could brighten both your days. 💬
Your Self‑Care Check‑In 📝
Ask yourself:
- Have I done something today to care for my emotional or physical well‑being?
- Is there a small shift I can make right now—like stepping outside, sending a kind message, or practising gratitude?
These tiny acts are far from trivial—they’re the building blocks of long‑term health, resilience, and joy.

A Final Reminder
You don’t need special tools or fancy routines to practice self-care — even small, intentional moments matter.
Remember: Self-care isn’t selfish, it’s essential.
It’s good for your health, your relationships, your resilience, and even your productivity.
So today, take a moment and choose to do something just for you.
Because you matter and you’re worth it 💛
Much love,
Sarah xo
