Tell us a little bit about yourself and what made you start Compass My Life?

My journey with Compass My Life really started in 2016 after a lot of transitions in my life had me in a rough spot. Growing up, I was always a very goal-oriented person. Having something to work towards was what got me up in the morning – I think this is true for most people.

Through my early adult years, I worked really hard towards graduating from college. My plan was to get an amazing job in a field I loved, find an apartment in the DC area, have friends I could go out with on the weekends… You know, just “adult” successfully in general.

That kind of changed though when I met my now husband, Josh. We dated all through college and ended up getting married the week we both graduated from our universities.

It was the craziest week of our lives as we both graduated (I took three finals), we got married, and Josh commissioned into the navy all within a 6 day period.

Fast forward about 9 months and life looked so different than I had ever even imagined. We were in a city I didn’t know (or like at the time). I still didn’t have a job and Josh was always gone with the ship.

I found myself having a rough moment one day when I started crying while making dinner – the reason unbeknownst to even me.

That was very unlike me and I eventually realized I was feeling stuck in life. I decided at that moment that I needed a change. So I did the most logical thing I could think of… I went to Google.

That was the start of my personal growth journey. It changed everything. Literally every single part of my life was transformed by learning how to intentionally make impactful changes.

As I looked around me, I saw others who were going through rough patches in their lives. So I started Compass My Life with the purpose of helping people navigate through the mess to lives they feel good about.

What message do you want to convey with your content?

Creating a life you feel good about is possible and probably simpler than you think.

I’m not saying it’s easy, but most of us think the life we truly want, is so far out of reach it’s not worth even trying. In reality, if you just put in the work to take one step a day towards your dream, you’ll get there…

And yes, having a life you feel good about is for YOU.

What do you do to stay positive when going through a rough patch in life?

I take note and am really intentional about what I’m focusing on and who I am listening to.

When you focus on the rough parts of the “now moment” you very quickly slip into survival or burnt-out mode.

Whereas, when you are careful to stay future-focused, you know what your “why” is, and the voices you listen to are growth-minded, forward-moving people, it’s easier to rise above the mess.

Where do you go to find inspiration and motivation?

I have two: books and masterminds

Lots of books. I read books like it’s what gives me life – because in many ways it does.

Everything we need to know, grow through, or work on is written about somewhere.

I’ve also joined a mastermind that has been so amazing for helping me with accountability and pushing me to the next level. These women are my lifelines. It’s been so impactful I’ve actually decided to start a mastermind of my own soon to provide the same kind of support for the Compass My Life community.

How do you include fun in your day?

Did I mention I like books? I do my best to go to bed early enough that I can sit and read a novel for 30-60 minutes before I sleep.

I also love taking walks outdoors – on the beach, around the neighbourhood lake, across hiking trails. I’ll find a place to walk wherever I go.

What self-care practices do you do regularly?

I have a morning routine that I’ve designed for myself that really makes me feel my best. It’s my way of taking care of myself first each day so that I can then go and take care of all the people and things that demand my attention in a day.

When I don’t get my self-care morning routine in, I don’t have as much to give others.

In a few sentences, describe what you believe are the key ingredients for a happy, healthy life.
  1. Having goals
  2. Having the right group of people to support and guide you
  3. Always being open to growth
  4. Trust your instincts but use wisdom
  5. Know what your metrics for health and happiness are
What would you say to someone who feels like they are stuck and don’t know how to make things better?

Don’t try to do it all and don’t feel ashamed about where you are.

Take a step back from the mess to figure out what ONE THING you can focus on and change that would have the greatest impact on your life.

What would you say to someone who is just starting out on their own personal development journey?

Give yourself grace and time. It truly is a journey and takes time, but if you will just take one step a day, you won’t even recognize yourself in a year.

I used to look at where other people were and feel like it was so far away I couldn’t reach it. Then one day, I read an article where someone had done the numbers to find that a 1% change a day in something, made it 37 times different in a year. I thought “what if I apply that to my life?”

So I did and now I challenge everyone to simply focus on being 1% better today than you were yesterday. If you do that, I promise your life will look so different in a year, you won’t even be quite sure how you got there.
